I have a comment about the AI of the advance wars games.
I've only played AWDS and DoR, but I've noticed that the AI hasn't changed noticeably as the series has progressed. I noticed when fighting specific COs or fighting on specific maps, the battles were either ludicrisly easier or harder.
For example...
I was playing Rough Terrain on AWDS with INCOME: 1000 NO FOG I was playing for orange star with HACHI against 3 cpus, all versus all. SASHA for BLUE MOON. JESS for GREEN EARTH. GRIMM for YELLOW COMET. AI: normal
This was my first time attempting this map, so I made some crucial errors in the beginning such as failing to take green earth HQ in the beginning. Yet, I won in the end, on DAY: 115
and it was quite interesting how I did it.
Blue moon maintained control throughout the battle (obviously). Green earth had died early on (day 10-20ish), Yellow comet was challenging me for the spoils at green earth HQ area
and blue moon was slowly advancing its massive army toward my northern pass. Blue moon had 50 army units comprised of mostly Neotanks, tanks, artillery, and some mech/inf.
NO JOKE
I conquered Yellow comet's army without much difficulty and simultaneously I began building a small army of rockets, mechs, and APC's at my base to defend Blue Moon's forces. I seriously doubted I would win this battle, but hitting the YIELD button felt wrong, so i trudged on....
In the end, it was just like 300. The pass allowed for a choke point, so Blue Moon could'nt advance very well. and by this time I had a small, but oddly intimidating army of rockets occupying as many safe squares as possible with 2-3 APC's to resupply. If I had been fighting a human, this would have been over very fast, but the computer was being very defensive and wouldn't move any unit (other than mabye a mech or two) within my range. So, I'd created a stalemate.
As i moved my small army across the dead Yellow comet territory, I realized that Blue moon's HQ was in sight and despite the fact that they had plenty of deployment centers around it, I knew they wouldn't be able to build anything because all 50 of their units were displaced at the "pointless" stalemate at my far away base.
But sadly as I dropped off my army on Blue moon's home territory, they finally caught on (those dumm Ais!!!!!!!!!) and began sending units back over there. I sadly had to kill a few and this allowed them to build units again!!!!
This is where the battle lasted forever, but in the end i captured the HQ and won.
Sorry for rambling there, but this is one of the biggest mistakes the AI has ever made. If they had been a human, they would have deleted several units to redeploy them back at HQ and thwart my attempts at capture much more efficiently.
The inability to delete and the overly conservative nature of the AI killed it in that fight even though (i think) the stage was designed for blue moon to win tenaciously.
